Uncle Wong's is quickly becoming our go-to place for Chinese takeout. It's definitely not the best (and there are a LOT of options in our area), but it's super close to our house and the food is reliable and good. Make sure you order the egg rolls. They are some of the best I've had. Very thin and crispy outside. Their braised green beans are also stellar. Main dishes are pretty standard, but tasty. I've had to wait a few times for takeout and it is not the speediest. But I felt like I was getting to know my neighbors while we waited, and it was kind of cool. One was looking for a soup for her elderly grandfather and they agreed to pick out some ingredient so he could eat it. If you're dining inside, the space is somewhat cramped. But they do have a couple of larger tables for family-style dining. We went once with our extended family when the restaurant was also pretty busy and they handled it well, considering I could only count two people working.

The Rinky family is still searching in vain for a nearby Chinese restaurant that will win over our hearts after Yummy's closed last year. We haven't been back to Uncle Wong's since the son was a baby. At that visit we had the coldest stink eye looks from the manager. The food was decent and the wait staff was nice. We just couldn't handle any more stink eyes. So it took us twenty years to give it another try. The restaurant seemed much smaller than I remember (maybe they moved to a smaller space?) We three ordered the lunch specials which came with soup and rice or chicken fried rice. Appetizers were extra. Son got the Orange Chicken with steamed rice and spring roll. The chicken came with a dark, heavy, sweet sauce, definitely not lemony. The spring roll was greasy and reheated. I got the vegetable chow mein with brown rice. It was just okay, but kind of greasy I ordered the garlic chicken wings which were small, dry, tough and overly seasoned with Five Spice. The son and I took a couple of bites and didn't eat the rest. Mr Rinky got the mixed vegetables with brown rice which came with a heavy dark sauce which he thought was some bottled Oy Soy teriyaki sauce. Thumbs down. The decor is non-existent. Our server was nice enough. There seemed to be several customers ordering take out. A couple of customers were rude and loudly complaining. Unlikely we'll return.

I give this Chinese kitchen an extra star for friendliness and general efficiency. I come here on occasion even though it's about a mile farther than other place not because the price is different, but because the food tastes a little lighter. I am beginning to think that a can of soda that is priced a little too high is a restaurant's way of watching out for one's health. It's rare to see a bottomless refill of soda at one of these mom and pop Chinese places.

I can't get past the waiter who is constantly screaming at customers. How unpleasant!

We have returned to Uncle Wong's several times since my initial review, trying a different dish each time in addition to past favorites. Their sizzling rice soup is delicious, as is their spicy garlic chicken. Katie greets us by name and tonight she remembered Alan's low sodium diet w/o prompting and went to make sure the kitchen knew. That sort of personalized attention to detail makes her and Uncle Wong's special. We were lucky we had dinner there tonight. They are closing tomorrow for a week in honor of Chinese New Year. Gung Hay Fat Choy.

Finally tried it for lunch and it just so happened to be one very hungover afternoon. We were greeted and escorted to a table almost immediately. Everyone were so friendly and extremely attentive. They probably could tell that I was not at my best so I appreciate them for that. Getting to the food part; I ordered the Prawns with lobster sauce. I was eating VERRRYYY slowly but I enjoyed what very little food I could keep down. The only reason why I couldn't give them more stars is because the leftovers I took home smelled and tasted funny a few hours later when I attempted to finish it after recovering from my liver abuse. Maybe I should've stored it in the fridge but it shouldn't have gone bad that quickly! Awesome service, great location with plenty of parking and clean. I just wish I could've truly enjoyed the meal.

Love the food, always hot and fresh, big.serving im always full when i leave, fast service, not always alot of parking.

Bland. Bland. Bland. Not enough seasoning on the fried chicken wings, Wor wonton soup was fair at best. Again, not much flavor. Lots of won tons, hardly anything else.. I stopped coming here years ago. Thought I'd try again. Since it's close to home. Won't be back.

The food was really good they also have excellent lunch specials and the customer service is excellent The only problem I have is that the food is good and it makes me want to go eat daily. everything is excellent I recommend you go for lunch and try out their lunch specials

There is a slew of Chinese restaurants along this strip of San Pablo Ave. Uncle Wong's would probably win the award for most modern or fresh-looking of them all. I've eaten here several times for lunch, most recently to try their Hung Tao Yee Fu Won Ton soup. My dad and I are on a mission to find the best in the area! The cooking method that makes this different from any other won ton dish is that the won tons are deep fried and then dumped into the soup at the last minute, but long enough for it to get "soggy." Too bad modern didn't translate into the best won ton. While the won ton soup was tasty, the won tons were not cooked the way we expected. It was still like a crispy deep fried won ton rather than the "soggy" texture, so they pulled it out too fast (or put in to short of a time). Anyway, their chili pepper beef dry chow fun was tasty! The waiter readily brought out chili sauce for us to increase the heat. The jar on the table seemed to be sitting there too long, but I still tried it LOL. Apparently Uncle Wong's does good takeout service as there were more to-go orders than people eating lunch in the restaurant. It is not a bad place to eat lunch, just nothing special about it aside from their bright and clean interior.

Very quiet place, the service was decent. I ordered hunan beef. Oddly the menu states a 15 minute prep time. To my surprise my plate hits the table in 7 minutes. The plate was not exactly what I expected. The taste was good and portion generous. It maybe that what i ordered wasn't their strong point. Its not a bad place, it just doesn't stand out.

  • Nick B.

It was great food but I felt like there wasn't very much value to how much you got. The delivery cost us about 35 dollars but the food that arrived looked like it could barely feed 2.

  • Thesilentone G.

Ordered the house fried rice and chicken wings. The rice was delicious well seasoned and I have plenty of meat in it. although I was a little skeptical about the fried chicken wings because they were really fried chicken wings I don't know what part of the chicken are eating but they definitely werent wings. So I only eat two. Service was great I just want order chicken from there ever again

I used to love coming here but literally the last three times I been here I have found hair in my food sorry uncle wong's but you have lost a regular customer

Haven't wrote a review in awhile. But this place is a bloody joke. Ordered the dinner special white chicken with prawns. Sneaky little bastards gave me 2 small shrimp instead. Told the scared and cowering waiter they were not praws. He said ok and walked away. Very poor quality food. Like you would expect in a chineese buffet business is obviously family owned as they prefer to let the staff sit at a table and blab with each other than take care of customers. We were never even offered refills on the water. If u want chineese food. Go to the store and buy a 99 cent microwave meal. Getting the same crap here but for 10 dollars

  • Kim B.

Some of best Chinese food in the East Bay, but customer service is terrible. Space is very limited.. Favorite dishes house fried rice, bbq wonton soup, sesame chicken, and fried prawns.

  • Jenn A.

A great place for a short drive and pick up. I've yet to be disappointed. One less star was for the 40 minute wait to get my order but that's probably my fault for ordering at a dinner rush. The restaurant is clean, staff is friendly and service is prompt when dining in.

    (4)
  • Tanya D.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE!!! The prices are great and the food is UNBELIEVABLE! We eat here at least once weekly! An absolute MUST try is the Salt and Pepper Spareribs!

    (5)
  • Jenny E.

The food here is really tasty, but their customer service is not great. We've ordered the dinner combos twice for takeout, and the second time the soup was missing. When we pointed it out, they handed us a paper menu with the soup crossed out in pen. We told them their online menu still included soup in the combo, and their response was that, "prices go up." Sure, that's fine, but you should honor the prices you give your customers. They also forgot the fortune cookies (listed in the combo as well) both times, which is no big deal but just added to the poor customer service experience.

    (2)
  • Larry D.

Still the best choice for a short drive pick up. Good food. Reasonable prices. You can call ahead even. Their lunch plates (only until 3pm) are reasonable and quite filling. If you like to raid the fridge for leftovers at 2am, their food is satisfying re heated because it's fresh when you get it. They were rated one of the top 100 chinese take outs in the US!

  • Nurse J.

Ridiculous!! Service sucks food tastes like its from a microwave. We will definitely not be back!

  • Elena H.

A friend recommended this place. She said that their Hung Tao Yee wonton is unique and amazingly tasty. This is so true. We have also tried other items and all of them tasted great! They have lunch menu everyday, including weekends and more importantly, no MSG!

If I was a Health Inspector I slap a "BIG" SKULL and CROSSBONE on the front entrance! (BECAREFUL NOW!) I've been coming with my family to Uncle Wong's for quite some time over the past years. But I become less interested in the food each time I go. Food Complaints: I asked for War Won-Ton with no water chestnuts (Tasted like I received a bowl of hot salt water, not what I anticipated) I asked for a medium box of seasme-chicken (Tasted as if someone sprinkled seasme seeds over orange chicken to make it seem as if it was (THE REAL DEAL....WRONG! and smothered in to much sauce) NOT COOL! The Brocolli Beef when I chewed a piece was real mushy but I have to give it to them the beef was REAL TENDER!! I found customers to be compelling overall Tip: Call in advance because they take a minute or two to get it started

Very good, no complaints from me at all.

Best salt and pepper pork chops I've found so far. I used to work close by, but I still make my way over here for those doggone pork chops! Reasonably priced to boot!

  • Valie F.

This place is just the thing when you need some greasy American style Chinese. The the soup broth is really good, and the the bbq pork friend rice is BOMB. Staff is super nice, and as an added bonus they're five minutes from my house. Get some. Nom.

  • Zee R.

$5.75 lunch special is terrific! Family owned staff and the food is great!

  • Betancourt E.

So we picked us up some to go food and they were sort of fast getting our food ready. The food itself was ok, def not the best Chinese food I've had but just ok. There wasn't an extraordinary amount of flavor and the egg rolls were not that good. I'd go there again but wouldn't expect greatness. They were certainly nice and so that's gotta count for something.

Short version: Common run-of-the-mill Chinese, prefaced that I've only ever gotten take out. So I live practically above this restaurant, and when I first moved in I figured I needed to try it. Since then I've gotten take out from them about 6 times, and every time the food is exactly the same: boring. This place is pretty much the stereotype of how to describe the food from a Chinese restaurant. Nearly everything tastes exactly the same, regardless of meat, sauce, vegetable, or spicing. My chicken should not taste like my shrimp, which should not taste like my beef. Furthermore, it's all just sorta overcooked, over-fried, and over-greased into oblivion. That's just plain tragic. On the plus side, at least it's consistent in it's mediocrity, and the prices are cheap. Weirdly, the place has signing and clipping up all over about how they were award winning in the 90's, and I'm baffled as to how that's even remotely possible. Times change, I suppose. Honestly, I would never dare offer up this place as an option to visitors or friends. It's the place I go to when I can't even be bothered to walk 3 blocks to Sawad Dee Thai.

Having lunch with my wife. My whole family and friends use this restaurant. This time we had lunch instead of dinner. The lunch was excellent. The people working in the restaurant are friendly and very helpful. This is a wonderful place to eat and the price is right.

I got take-out at Uncle Wong's for the first time this week and was quite satisfied. It is by no means a "gourmet" Chinese restaurant, but the General Tsou's chicken I got was absolutely fantastic and I've been craving it ever since. The price is decent and the portions are average, but I was extremely satisfied with the flavor. I give it 3.5/5 stars and will definitely return in the future!

I love Uncle Wong's. I moved to California in 2003 and happened to move into the Del Norte apartments and literally lived directly above Uncle Wong's. I love Chinese food and on the first day of unpacking my room mate and I decided to go downstairs and have dinner. Ever since that first night I have been a fan of Uncle Wong's, over ALL the other Chinese food in El Cerrito and Richmond (and I've tried just about all of them). Since I no longer live in El Cerrito I don't eat there often, but I happened to stop by tonight. 8 years later and their food is still as excellent as the first day I ate it. I have to say eating it dine in fresh is better than take out. I had the Spicy garlic chicken Combination Dinner and my mom had the Mongolian Beef Combination Dinner, both were great and the veggies were tender and the meal wasn't too salty. The Combination dinner comes with egg flower soup and a egg roll, a great value for the $7.50 price tag. Where else can you get a filling dinner like they offer for under $20 for 2, I'll tell you... nowhere. I find the service to be good. I few years ago I had a bad server experience their and didn't go back for a while, but they have seemed to clear that up a while ago. I love that it is still family owned and that their food has not changed in quality over the years. I'll continue to be their costumer as long as they are in business.

I was happy to give this place a more thorough try, as my only experiences thus far had been take-out, so a few friends and I went in tonight. It was quite delicious! Everyone ordered something different, and we shared our dishes, along with some chow mein and (of course) potstickers. I thought everything was delicious. The sesame chicken was sweet, but not overpowering, the general tso's chicken was spicy and flavorful, the chow mein was tasty with lots of veggies and meat mixed in, the fried pork spareribs were tender, and (my choice dish) the beef with black mushrooms was delicious, especially the mushrooms. Lots of yummy veggies in that dish too. For everything we got, it was 52 bucks. Very reasonable I think. I'll definitely be coming back here!

This quiet, clean and lovely cafe used to be in walking distance from my house. Now that I live in Oakland, it is still one of my favorites. The food is great. The owner greets everyone personally. Service is lovely. It is difficult to see in a small corner of the building where there are condos across from the Honda Dealer. But you can park so that is a great benefit. Watch for the El Cerrito Del Norte Bart, and it is on the block north of the parking lot, two blocks north of the Target. I don't want you to miss a very sweet location. Always a pleasure.

Oh wow just wow. I usually don't ding a lot of points for service but holy crap was the service awful. Unbelievable! I thought i was on candid camera or something but no, the service really is that bad. I am just going to list the misdeeds right quick. 1. We ordered pot-stickers as an appetizer they came 5 minutes after we received our lunches. wtf... 2. I asked the waiter if i could have some water so the C goes and grabs the pitcher and sets it down on the table and walks away. Whatever... 3. We asked for hot chili oil and he say yes and walks away. 10 minutes later we ask for hot chili oil again and he tells us to mix the vinegar and the rooster sauce together to get chili oil. wtf... Three strikes your out you worthless B's. The only reason i am giving this place two stars is because its very cheap and the food is mildly edible. Its too bad cause this place had potential. YOUR SERVICE SUCKS THE BIG ONE. I will not come back. I would rather take my chances getting robbed at gunpoint eating in Richmond than drive the 5 extra minutes to this rat hole.

We were on our way to a late movie and thanks to Yelp we found Uncle Wong's late night (ok, like 10pm). Even though we got there right when they were closing, they whipped up some delicious potstickers and fresh mu shu pork. The pancakes were so fresh... That was the best part. Fresh and in a steamer. Cheap and satisfying meal.

Uncle Wongs use to be my favorite spot to get Chinese food. What happen? I think when you go somewhere on a ongoing bases the food should remain the same good. Unfortunetly that is not the case with Wongs. Last time and I mean the last time I will eat there . I will say this it seems they put old food on the bottom of the take out boxes all crunchy rice and one scoop of fresh on the top also the noodles, soggy, gross disgusting avoid this place I do now.

We love salt & pepper spare ribs and have had a special place to eat in or take out. They have been slidin down the "perfect" scale for a while but we thought we'd give em one more try. They were closed so we went to another neighborhood spot that I've been to like one time before and don't even know if they have S/P ribs, (my baby had a cravin) Uncle Wong's saved the day with the best Ribs we have had so far and the cutest waiter bring in the rest of the fare, Pot Stickers (ok I'm conventional) House fried rice, and spicy garlic Broccoli. This Broc was a treat no soupy sauce just nice chunks of fried garlic with a slight spicy flavor and perfect, yes perfectly cooked broccoli, not to crunchy and not soft. Beautiful! Thumbs up everything was deee licious! We happy now. :)

Uncle Wongs i a GREAT familiy resurant located right below my apartment complex. I love all the choices they have on the menu. The best part is the is a authentic chinese resturant with the option to order combinaton meals for lunch or dinner and they are not that expensive when you are only feeding one or two people. I like the spicy fish, salt and pepper ribs, the honey walnut prawns, the chicken fried rice and pretty much anything I have tried. I go here quite often which is why like them so much!!!! Now they just need to deliver to my door step and I will be set!!

    (4)
  • Ann M.

Just had take out from Uncle Wong's. haven't been there in over a year. Very disappointed. Walnut prawns had 3 walnuts in the container. The BBQ pork chow mein had maybe 5 pieces of Pork on top but none in the bottom. The take out bag had no napkins, no soy and no utensils, either forks or chop sticks. Clearly the establishment is cutting corners at the customers expense. I used to love this place but won't be going back there any time soon.

Just tried this out the other day and now I am a fan. I am usually worried about Chinese food as sometimes there is too much greese and sugar for my taste. We had the house fried rice and it was just right. We tried out some the Hunan Prawns and they were fantastic, I had never had this style before and it was fantastic because it was kinda sweet and spicy. The staff was very nice and the prices were good too. A place to revisit for sure. Can I give it 3.5 stars. That would be my thought.

I've been an Uncle Wong's customer for well over 10 years. They used to deliver in the El Cerrito area, so I had their food delivered for convenience. It was good as take-home. A couple of years after moving there, friends had a big dinner party there, so I discovered the restaurant itself. With the food not having sat in a car for a while after cooking, it was really great. The service is very personal and good. You do have to ask for chop sticks, sometimes twice. But that's not the end of the world. We almost always get their war won ton soup. It is the best. In fact, I pretty much don't eat war won ton soup anywhere else anymore; it's always a disappointment after Uncle Wong's. My partner loves their house chow fun, and we eat that time after time. It's delicious and avoids the overly greasy reputation of chow fun. We get it without the gravy. We also frequently eat their pea sprouts, dry fried spare ribs, and Chinese fried chicken. I am a big broccoli-beef fan, but haven't liked theirs; too much gravy. I've finally learned to order it "dry" - and then it's great. Too much goop is a bad thing, says me. The owners almost always come to our table and ask after us, our meal, etc. As another reviewer said, I've pretty much watched their kids grow up. This is the epitome of the family restaurant. They are now closed Tuesdays and for a week or so in December. They started taking vacations since I've been a customer, and the Tuesday thing is fairly recent - the past couple of years or so. Their slow days were Monday and Tuesday, and other Chinese places are closed on Mondays. That is the reason behind that choice. I would easily give them 5 stars, but it is usually really cold in there. The bathroom is down a strange hall (it serves the strip mall) and I'm sure it's hot in the kitchen, so they keep the doors open between that hall, the outdoors, and the dining room. If I remember to bring my sweatshirt, it's a good day. Their lunch specials are incredibly cheap. Their dinner prices are completely reasonable. This place is a find.

Ordered everything no msg: Mongolian beef & bbq pork fried rice. The beef was really good with a nice selection of veggies with it instead of just green onions, but the fried rice wasn't quite as flavorful as I'd like. We've ordered the same from Royal Palace (delivery) - I think Wong's has the better beef, but loses to Royal Palace on the fried rice. Service was fast and friendly.

I have been going to this chinese restaurant for about 6 years and I love it. Never a complaint. I've eaten out and stayed to dine in. I've actually seen the owners kids pretty much grow up. Their food is excellent. Very tasty and very appealing. I normally get their chicken chow mein with extra sprouts :)

I have been going to Uncle Wong's for years not because the food is excellent but just because the price is right, food is decent, and service is always friendly. A bonus point is their decor which feels like a clean livingroom in a friend's home. Lunch specials are always a steal. You get rice or chow mein, chicken wing or fried wonton, and a choice of entree for about 6 dollars. My husband and I have tried a range of things including won tons, sweet and sour ribs, fish, shrimp, Chinese broccoli, Chinese green beans, beef chow fun, fried chicken wings, and roast duck. Food has been inconsistent. If you like won tons, order the won tons with roast duck. However, the size of the wontons, quality of broth, and even the amount of duck you get will vary each time. Since the prices are low, I don't feel too bad when my wontons are small meatless things floating in salted water for broth. The only consistent thing that I like at Uncle Wong's is their roast duck. If you eat it at the restaurant, the duck has wonderful juicy meat and a crisp skin. Normally, they don't oversalt the duck and then you get to really enjoy the sweetness of the duck's meat. You can order half a duck which is plenty for two people if you plan to order something else with it. If you order chow fun, make sure you tell them to use very little oil. Otherwise, you will be drinking oil with your chow fun. For an additional dollar, they will add "gravy" to your chow fun which is essentially a sauce that makes your noodles extra moist. I like it but if you like your chow fun done the common way which is stir-fried in oil then "gravy" is not for you. Shrimp at this restaurant will disappoint you-- small tasteless objects. Their seafood is not their strong point, the sauces tend to be watery and taste like Chinese bottled sauce mixed with water and a little corn starch. Veggies like Chinese broccoli and Chinese long green beans tend to be decent but not cheap. Mixed veggies are a toss up because you will get bland boiled American broccoli with a few sticks of carrots covered in watery sweet sauce. If you stick with the duck and Chinese broccoli/ long green beans then you should have a decent Chinese meal. Otherwise, the sweet and sour pork is decent too though a bit strong tasting. The fried chicken wings are not particularly good but does the job if you are in the mood for fried foods. Food here taste best fresh. Don't order wontons to go or you will get home to a mushy meal. Come for a decent meal for decent prices and hot tea.

The food and customer service is great. I used to love there won-ton soup and lunch specials (tried most) very delicious! The only thing is that on three separate occasions i found hair (twice) and a baby roach in the soup -Which terrified me. I've never found anything in any other order. I'm never going back which is too bad because the food was yummy. OH and when i brought it to their attention they didn't even give me my money back. I should've sued, DAMMIT!

I would definitely recommend this restaurant! I live in San Francisco and I will make the trip just for the food! The dried fried spare ribs are the best! I always get them. The general tsao chicken is awesome! Its not fried with flour. It seems to be grilled. I've been eating here for 5 yrs and my friend's family has been coming here for a very long time. I recommend you give it a try!

We went there for coworkers Birthday Luncheon. The service is a bit slow, and we keep reminding the server to give us stuff like Chopsticks, Tea, Tea Cup, they even made a mistake in taking some of the order but it's OK. I think they need more servers. The Staff is super friendly and we asked them to take our pictures and their good in taking group pictures also. The Food is tasty and the price is reasonable.

I used to come here all the time when i drove to work, the food is good, i always ordered the fried tofu with eggplant also the kung pao tofu. They used to give you sizeable portions but then they got a little smaller, I take bart in everyday now so haven't gone in a few months, but if you're in the area and have a taste for chinese food check it out.

Good Food, nice people and the best Wor Wonton soup I have had in ages. They call it Uncle Wong's Wonton soup. The broth is very tasty and the soup is loaded wit wontons, shrimp, BBQ pork and chicken. It is a meal in itself. I have also had the MuShu Pork and the little pancakes are delicate and the veggies and meat are very tasty. I have also enjoyed their Sizzling Rice soup and enjoyed that too. I do have a soft spot for Mom and Pop restaurant and this one fits the bill! I just love the food and I love that they know me by name and always make me feel like I am welcome and that my food is prepared exactly how I ask!

stick with the fried rice and chow mein. the dishes are scarce on meat and what's up with hacked up bits of bones and cartilage swimming in sauce being sold as spare ribs? do they want folks to choke? very weak!

This place is not very good. I went because we wanted to try something new. It is kind of far from Berkeley, where there are plenty of good Chinese restaurants and not too far from the Pacific East Mall where there are great places. First, the place was empty on a Sat night with only one other couple there. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but a bit weird. There was still a fortune on the table from the last people that sat at the table. It said I would have good luck in my finances - and then today I lost $200 on the market. So, that's one strike against the place. Incorrect advice on the fortune cookies. Maybe it was my fault for reading someone else's fortune. Maybe the person who got the fortune originally had the good luck with the finances. Second, the place was cold as hell. I am normally not sensitive to that type of thing but it was like an icebox. Maybe they were trying to save on heat since nobody was at the place. Since it was so cold, I had to wear my sweatshirt while eating dinner. They use those slippery plastic chopsticks that make it really easy to drop the food. I am pretty good with chopsticks and have been using them for 35 years. I know restaurants can't use wooden chopsticks unless they are disposable due to health reasons, but the plastic ones are not a great solution.. Anyway, I dropped the food from the slippery chopsticks on the sleeve of my sweatshirt a few times and got it dirty. Strike two. Strike three, and the real reason the place gets the bad review is that the food isn't good. I only tried three dishes, but they were pretty mediocre. The West Lake Beef soup was nothing special. The string beans in a kind of XO sauce were good but you can get it that way at most places. The Kung Pao with beef, chicken and shrimp was in some nasty sweet sticky sauce (that gunked up my sweatshirt) and the chicken had a weird texture. Also, the selling point was that it was supposed to be cheap - and it wasn't that cheap. The rest of the menu did not look very exciting. I don't necessarily think I ordered the wrong stuff, I think the place is not that good. Sorry to go against the grain with all of the good reviews here. But if everyone who likes the place likes it because of the price, there are about 10 different places that are better for the same money. Clay Pot Seafood House on San Pablo in El Cerrito, for one. Check out China Village on Solano or Daimo for a few extra bucks.

Well, I didn't mean to eat at Uncle Wong's... I was going to Strings Italian Cafe, just a few doors down. But I had found them in my Entertainment coupon book, and they had a small sign on their door that they don't accept Entertainment coupons. Hmmph! Then why are they in the book? On principle, we went elsewhere. I happened to notice Uncle Wong's in the same strip and happened to remember that I had an Entertainment coupon for them too, so we (my boyfriend and I) went there. Seemed like the standard Chinese place from the menu. Entertainment coupon recommended the dry braised green beans, so we got those and the broccoli-cashew, and the veggie fried rice. The food was all good. The beans were surprisingly good; I don't usually like green/string beans. The broccoli was in that goopy stuff Chinese places often have, but I still liked it; it would have been better without the goopy sauce though. The rice was fine, though we did find a little rubber band in it, the kind that goes around scallions. We politely let them know, and they were so nice, insisted on giving us a brand new plate of rice and didn't charge for the rice at all. We had even said it was ok, we didn't mind, but we ended up getting all three things for the price of one. Any place can have a mishap, but this place handled it very well. The service at Uncle Wong's was great, didn't have to wait for a water refill or anything. Plus very friendly and polite. The bathroom was clean, though oddly it was outside the restaurant proper. Prices were good, like $6 for each thing we ordered. The decor was typical cheap-chinese, though the sloped wood beam ceiling was pretty and the support beams were appropriately feng-shui-d. I would eat here again.

After a long hard day at work, there is nothing better than real tasty chinese food. These folks are fast with the take out. I have never eaten in cause I like the take out option. I have never had a bad meal yet, I love the green beans! The decor is typical 1980's yuk, but who cares- the food & service are gr8!

Great family business - I love family businesses to start. I have been going to this place for over 10 years. This is why it is great. 1. My food choices have always been fresh, tasty and above average in comparison with other chinese restaurants I have been to and I have a verl well versed palette. This is what I have ordered and loved: lemon chikcen - always chicken breast - wonderful sauce not too sweet not too tangy, cashew nut chicken, mushu-chicken, chicken chow fun (the flat noodle). I dont eat seafood so I wouldnt know about that stuff. I also like vegetarian dishes and the water chestnuts and peas taste awesome. NEVER had bland food there - so im suprised to hear people write that. All I can think is that if you have a VERY high sugar diet and fatty food diet - then everything other than super salty or high sugar content food will be bland to you! I dont eat refined sugar other than what may be added in food when I order out. I would have given 4 stars BUT am added 5 stars cuz the bad reviews on here weighing their score down is complete b.s.

Good Food but cheap on the shrimp. I came in with a few co-workers to have lunch and they said it was good. They weren't lying but the only downfall is that they give so little rice... but for a good lunch price a good bang for your buck. I had the sweet and sour prawns and the prawns are skimpy shrimp lol... and it wasn't a good amount Other then that like I said price was good and food quality was good.

Perfect for lunch since I can order my own food and not have to worry about family style crap. Service is decent. Food is good. Their egg roles are delish.

Uncle Wongs is the place where my whole family goes for chinese. Its clean, quiet and the staff are super friendly. I and my family are regulars - ie we eat there once a month and on special occasions like birthdays. The staff know us on sight-know our normal order and we have a "table" yep.. a table. Sounds very mafioso right? Ultimately the reason we keep going back is because the food is awesome and so are the owners and its reasonably priced!

Every once in a while I will crave Uncle Wong's noodle dish with tomato sauce. Yes, that sounds just like spaghetti and sauce from your local Italian eatery, but this is way different. It is very good. It is not on the take out menu, so eat there at least once and memorize the names of your favorite dishes. Parking is a breeze since they have a lot and there is always street parking in this part of El Cerrito. It is literally next door to BART, so you can BART over if you are feeling green. Take out is pretty straightforward. Pick up a take out menu when you are there and call ahead next time. The service is pleasant and efficient. They aren't wearing themed hats or ball gowns, so there is nothing notable to say about the staff. I have only eaten there a couple times as I could just fall out my window and be at their front door. Their Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce is very nice and al dente. The sauce, however, is more like a broth, but that is okay as I like to supplement with my own supply at home. Their hunan shrimp is good if you either have it there or mix the sauce with the shrimp in you wok at home to mingle to flavors. (What, doesn't everyone have a well-seasoned wok in their pantry?) General Tsou's chicken and the lemon chicken dish are well prepared. Their hot & spicy soup and wonton soups are good. Okay, let me dedicate a full paragraph to the walnut prawns. If you are reading this on your iPhone at an "authentic" Chinatown bistro, get your tush out of there an on the BART. Get off at El Cerrito del Norte, walk past the BART parking lot and into Uncle Wong's. Order the walnut prawns. Order 10 servings of the walnut prawns. They are very, very good. The restaurant is on the ground floor of an apartment complex called Del Norte Place. My only big complaint is that they do not deliver to the apartments. I understand the logistics of this, but I would order from them daily if they would only deliver. Having to change out of my pajamas (which are practically tattooed to my skin at this point) and brush my hair just to have Chinese food is so much work! I say come get take out a couple times. It will not disappoint. Ooh, if you get those ValPak coupons in the mail, Uncle Wong's participates. It is always nice to get a few bucks off your meal.

Bad food & misleading ads! I just tried this place for the first time last night because of a flyer on my car. I ordered several items for take-out, and when I got there they had to re-package all the food because the portions for the prices on the flyer are smaller than regular orders. The ad did not mention that but I did mention the ad when ordering, and was annoyed at how long it took to repackage everything--wasting food, materials and my time. When I got the food home, it wasn't even good, and the chow mein was ery greasy. Avoid this place.

My fiancé and I came by because this place has become his new lunch stop with its affordable prices and good food. The staff was very attentive and the family can be seen in the kitchen enjoying each other and cooking. Our dinner was about $22 and there was a lot of food (we ordered the Mandarin dinner for two). The fried rice isn't greasy at all and the rest of the food was fresh. There are constant reminders of the quality of food on the wall with the recent awards here and there. I'll definitely be coming back to try my ultimate deal maker/breaker, the house chow fun.

Good food and nice, friendly staff. They serve generous portions. One drawback is that their hours are weird. I went there on a Tuesday and it was closed. Random...

Recommended by the SF Chronicle as one of their 'bargain bites', my friends and I decided to get take-out from this neighborhood joint. We were hoping it would become our 'go-to' local Chinese place. Wow. Not so much. Got two signature dishes, one standard dish, one appetizer: Potstickers - smelled funny....how do you mess up potstickers?! Garlic Chicken - boring, bland Cashew Chicken - bland, flavorless, cashews were spongy Hunan Beef - definitely the most tasty and proof that if you deep fry anything it is going to taste ok; certainly not the healthiest meal and not worth it in the end The service was decent/fast and the folks were nice but the food pretty much sucked. My friend said it best, "we made the WONG decision tonight...we should have eaten at the Red Onion".

not bad but not great. They wonton soup is AWESOME! I always have to drink a large bowl of it when i go. The food is really cheap for the portion that you get. Overall 3.5.

I have been here several times. The food here is average, most of dishes taste similar. I think because they might use the "universal-sauce" as the base sauce, and twist a little bit to make it different for each dish. if you have tried many tasty Chinese food before, you will easily see what I mean. The price is fair, because the amount of each dish is good. If for some reason you are close by, give it shot. But not worth to drive here purposely, you might be disappointed.

I really really hate to do this, however I feel the need to forwarn people. I recently moved to the Richmond/ElCerrito area alittle over 4 months ago and I visited Uncle Wongs several times. I'm a once a week chinese take out queen and so I was happy to find them right on San Pablo not to far from my home. My forst two experiences were so so.. i went in late about 8 and figured late night rush job.. but my two visits during Sunday afternoons really disappointed me. I hate to say the service was poor and rude..asking for extra napkins or warm FRESH sweet and sour with out things floating in it must be extreme requests.. but the straw that broke my back was the chopped up chow mein noodles as if they were recycled. but THEE CLEANER.... UN CLEAN prawns.. then were under cooked and had the shit trail still in them.. I almost fainted!!!!!!! anyway PLEASE don't take this the wrong way.. but I would stay away from this place.. they seem to wanna just feed you anything and expect you to pay... so typical of some businesses...

Excellent place to go for lunch on a budget. The service is friendly, fast and the menu has a good selection of rice plates.

Edible food in West Contra Costa County? I must admit that I was skeptical at first, but then again, I reasoned that this wouldn't be the first or last time that I exchanged my hard-earned cash for a mediocre product or service. Was I proven wrong! That $6 (that's including tax. yeah really) bough me a healthy portion of not oozing with grease, chicken fried rice, more than 4 moderately sized prawns, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, and a not oozing with grease egg roll to boot. Fancy that! Mind you, that was an item from the Combination Luncheon Deluxe, but I'm telling you, that's all I had to eat all day, and I didn't want for anything else. Quantitatively speaking (I made up a new word), that is a pretty good sized meal. Quantity AND Quality! Wow, what a concept. Obviously, I'm on my way to being a repeat customer.

I couldn't believe a Chinese restaurant in a strip mall would be any good, but when this place was recommended by a fussy friend, I had to give it a try. Favorite items are the salt & pepper rock cod, pea sprouts, Chinese tender greens (Chinese broccoli), and the dry braised string beans. All the 'suburban' favorites can be found on the menu too: sweet & sour pork, lemon chicken, fried rice, etc ... and they're damn fine as well. Fast service, affordable prices, yummy food.

High quality food at a reasonable price. I have been going to this place for years and just had their banquet dinner and it was very reasonable. I had liked Little Hong Kong but have gone back to liking this restaurant better - cheaper and less crowded.

Absolutely, Uncle Wongs is our favorite for local chinese in a town filled with independent asian restaurants. Their food is completely reliable. It's not gourmet, but neither is it nasty American-style chinese. No mystery meats, but no greasy chow mein. I find their food fresh and non-greasy. And good prices! My favorites there are the beef with double mushroom, beef or prawn with snow peas, great MuShu, beef with string beans, string beans alone, or the sesame chicken. It's all good, we've never had a bad meal at Uncle Wongs.
